Karvia Municipality in words and figures
Karvia is located in the northernmost part of Satakunta, bordering South Ostrobothnia and Pirkanmaa. Neighboring municipalities are Kankaanpää, Kauhajoki, Kurikka and Parkano.
Karvia is located on the Finnish Backland, the highest point rising 186 meters above sea level in Kauraharju. The landscape consists of deciduous forests with groundwater areas and bogs with peat production. Lakes and rivers crisscross the landscape. The preservation of original livelihoods in Karvia is visible in the arable fields and grazing cattle.
The center of Karvia is located on the shores of Lake Kirkkojärvi. The settlement is divided into a town and villages: Kantti, Sarvela, Ämmälä, Sara, Karviankylä, Alkkia and Suomijärvi.
Residents of Karvia are mainly employed in agriculture, services and small-scale industry.
Municipal coat of arms
On March 28, 1956, the Ministry of the Interior granted the municipality of Karvia the right to use the municipal coat of arms designed by artist Olof Erikson, whose coat of arms reads: “On a blue field, above a six-kuro base, a fortress, all gold.”
The blue field and the spruce grove depict the nature of Karvia, and the fort is Kyrön Skantzi, built as a place to catch military deserters. It was located in Kant, at the intersection of the Karvianjoki River and Kyrönkankaantie.
